shut your mouth!

June 8, 2010

i couldnt help but think about the video we once saw in class about the woman who worked at that office and got interviewed. in the clip it showed how her words got completely mixed up by the journalist and he reported statements that were made by the lady but just misconstrued. Recently something similar happened when twilight actress kristen stewart made a reference to being photographed by paparazzi and compared it to being raped. Yes, it is a little out there and it is pretty unnecessary, but what is the big deal. other celebrities say stupid things all the time and get nothing for it but kristen being in the spotlight get a completely negative reaction from almost every angle and she had no other option but to apologize for something that really isnt that big of a deal. people in the media are mixing up words left and right just to get the point of view that they want to share, across. this to me is personally stupid, but without it then there would be no celebrity media for the most part. so in some ways, as a PR major, im grateful that this stuff happens cause although i cant stand it as a person, its what will be paying my bills.

walk of fame now walk of shame.

June 8, 2010

it has currently been announced that sadly, all the characters that would dress up and take photos with tourist at the chinese theater on hollywood boulevard are now banned since it has become almost violent when tourists get nagged and harassed to tip these characters after taking photos. something similar happens at the 3rd street promenade when a group of dancers actually grab you and make you stay and watch once youve been watching for a good minute. they do a countdown and make sure that whoever stays must tip! this is a way of life for these people i suppose, but they have only hurt themselves by being so persistant about the tips as now they have been banned. I personally think that these people need to cut out on the aggressiveness in order to really have a successful act.

human implanted chip?

June 8, 2010

My father is a hard-core republican and religiously follows Ron Paul and his ideas. Somewhere in the mist of all the craziness that my dad speaks of to me, he had mentioned once something about a government implanted chip in all humans that allowed the government to know where we were at every point in time and served as a medical/financial/educational recording device that basically held all your information and could just be scanned at any time. When heading to the airport, passports would not be necessary nor would having tickets for your flight or cash since it all be automatically stored and scannable in your chip. Now out of the several things i hardly ever decide to pay attention to my father about, this was one that stood out and screamed at me right in my face. after doing a little research, a couple of years ago this chip got passed and was allowed for medical purposes and goes by the name RFID. This is ridiculous and way too out of control. all our privacy will be lost, and all though the media will most likely make seem like an easier, safer, newer technological advancement, what it really is, is an invasion of our privacy, and will allow the government to have basically complete control and records of all our doings and history. If this ever does really take place, i’m moving to Russia.

people magazine reports on a actual person?

June 8, 2010

it was reported on people magazine that a 7 year old boy by the name of Kyron has gone missing from his elementary school in portland, Oregon after he attended his schools science fair. His mother dropped him off at school in the morning, but was surprised when he didnt return home later that afternoon. It had been only a day and People magazine are reporting this story as one of their top ones. Children go missing more often than we know, but only certain times do they choose to release these stories publicly. But, why people magazine? I’m glad that the story is getting more attention in different areas of the media, but i am still curious as to why people would report this one story out of any other. Is it because there was no other juicy celebrity story to write about? could it be because maybe the young boys family knows someone at people? Maybe its because Khole Kardashian hasn’t gained or lost any weight on her diet plan. Whatever the reason may be behind it, i just hope they find that kid, and if releasing this story through this outlet benefitted that, then i think it should be done more often.

Marijuana gets in the way with actors reputation

June 6, 2010

According to CNN, Chace Crawford was arrested early friday morning in Plano, Texas. Chase Crawford, 24 years of age, has received two Teen Choice Awards for his acting role in CW’s “Gossip Girl.” The actor was driving his 2003 Nissan 350Z when officers decided to pull him over. Inside his car, the police found less than two ounces of marijuana. Because Crawford was not selling the marijuana and did not have more than two ounces, his crime will be charged as a misdemeanor. Although the usual penalty for someone who commits this crime is a maximum of 180 days in jail and a $2,000 fine, he may just be sentenced with a year or less of probation. Usually for possession of marijuana, the person convicted is rarely given jail time. If Crawford successfully completes his probation, the charge will be removed from his criminal record .

Because Chase Crawford is so well-known due to his role in “Gossip Girl,” the media must make a big deal over a marijuana charge. Yes marijuana is a drug, but in California it is medically recommended for patients whom doctors feel can benefit from the use of it. It should not be as severe of a sentence as being in possession of heroin, cocaine, crystal meth or any other street drugs. I feel that Chase Crawford was just caught in the wrong place at the wrong time and although it was only marijuana, it will still affect his reputation as an actor due to the fact that many young teens follow the show.

MusicInTheMedia

April 8, 2010

In class today there was a discussion about controversial/political music in the 1960s and how popular it was compared to now in the 2000s. There was a lot more “known” and “mainstream” political music in the 60s, but now in the 2000s, i feel as if there is still pleanty of controversial and political music, just not as mainstream. In the 60s being signed by a label or having airtime on the radio was really important. In order to be heard you had to be mainstream or “signed.” Currently, most bands that are political are underground and have more of a direct audience. Certain bands or artists that play a certain type of music direct their messeges to a certain group or fanbase. These fanbases have become cults of some sort and i’ve noticed this with the more underground/rock/punk/screamo type bands that yell and scream and play angry music about certain controversial or political topics that state their personal opinions. Those who follow or listen to this music usually follow the same ideas as the artist or group. It is possible at many times that people just like to listen to the music for what it is instead of the lyrics and messeges they convey, but usually agree with the opinions of the artist. Nowadays anything that is controversial or political in the mainstream of music has got to be by someone who is already famous or mainstream. The people who make music such as the blackeyed peas, pink, greenday, the dixie chicks, etc. are already popular by their certain genre of music and then just so happen to write a political song that catches attention or just has a catchy beat or melody. The last really controversial song i can remember being in the main stream was American Idol runner-up Adam Lambert who caught the attention of the media by being openly gay. His song For Your Entertainment and his performance of it at the AMAs. His sexual and very homosexual performance created a huge controversy because of what it was. Dancing erotically and kissing other men was “disturbing” to certain viewers and was to “graphic for television.” I agree with this at a certain degree but believe that nowadays anything of such is usually planned or known to be what it is. Controversy creates attention wether good or bad. Attention is success, business, and money regardless of being negative or not. Most people say that “any press is good press” which is reasonable.

Hello WORLD… my husband cheated FYI.

March 25, 2010

So lets start off with Tiger Woods and Jesse James; these two men are basically despicable and there actions are inexcusable. Secondly, I cannot stand the fact that the media is blowing up the stories of Tiger Woods and Jesse James cheating on their wives. The only good thing that is derived from this is that the world is informed on their wrong doings and at least they’ll get to feel half of the embarrassment that their families must feel. Another thing I cannot stand to see is how these mistresses that these men have felt the need to come out and release everything to the media just for their “fifteen minutes of fame” and in doing so they actually do get attention and make a couple of thousand dollars. THIS IS RIDICULOUS. I am not completely against the media blowing these stories up because, although they make me sick to my stomach, Sandra Bullock would have never even found out about her cheating, douche bag of a husband in the first place. It’s just so sad that after an amazing accomplishment of winning her first Academy Award for the major category of Best Actress, her success is completely overshadowed by the hurt and embarrassment of her husband being unfaithful. People have even made comments so terribly by saying things like, “Sandra was really on ‘The Blind Side’ by believing what her and Jesse had been real,” which is just so sad. These stories should get their 5 minutes on news channels as CNN and FOX News and move on to something more important. I also definitely think that the news should NOT give these stupid and pathetic women that these men sleep with the time of the day and at that any money at all or media attention. Yes, I understand it makes money and yes, I know it’s what people want to read, but lets put ourselves in these positions and see how we would want the situation to be handled. These are marriages not movies. Lets really think about it people.

The Academy Awards

March 12, 2010

During our discussion in class on Thursday it had been mentioned that The Academy Awards viewers had gone up %15. In fact, after doing some research, the award show had actually gone up %22 in viewers from last year. Aside from having 10 movies in the final category of Best Motion Picture, another tactic The Academy used in order to higher ratings was getting younger and more popular people to present the awards. Among some of the presenters were actors and musicians like Miley Cyrus, Taylor Lautner, Kristen Stewart, Zac Effron, and a couple more. In the days prior to the awards show tabloids and celebrity blog websites had in fact made comments about how several of these younger people were going to be attending the award show. I feel like this was one of the cleverest ways that they could have raised their rating because most teenager hardly watch these shows since the movies or people that the award shows involve don’t really pertain to the age group. Lets get real, most people from ages 13-19 don’t even know what a Movie Score is or a Screen Play for that matter. Yet, when they hear on People Magazine that Miley Cyrus is going to be presenting at the awards without boyfriend Liam Hensworrth in tow, their attention is now captured.

don’t worry, you’re a celebrity you won’t go to jail.

March 5, 2010

So, one main thing that I have noticed in the media lately is all the talk about Lil’ Wayne and how he was supposed to go to jail a long time ago. The date for him going to prison has been getting pushed back another week for reasons that are ridiculous. It bothers me how just because he is a celebrity he can get away with the things he does and he doesn’t get punished for them. This is only a problem with Lil’ Wayne but with other celebrities as well. As soon as they get sentenced problems with the jails start arising like “no room for their booking” or “a fire in the courthouses” and to me, this is just starting to get out of hand. It is things like this that make it seem that as if when you’re a celebrity you can get away with anything that isn’t murder.

It was just two months ago when i was back in my hometown in Laredo, Texas which is a border town that Lil’ Wayne was supposed to perform a concert but it got postponed a day because he and his posse got stopped at the check point and were caught with Marijuana. Being who he is, he got let go on a warning and was able to perform the very next day. Lil’ Wayne got a year in prison for possession of a loaded gun, but got an extension for a week in order to go to the dentist to fix his teeth before he went to jail. Is this fair? If i got caught with marijuana would they let me get a week extension because i had a cavity? I don’t think so.
